Net metering & export credits
No net metering — Smart Renewable Energy Export (net billing). Under SRE Export, exports earn time-varying credits that differ by island and time period (2024–2026 rates for Oahu: ~13.5¢/kWh daytime, 18.9¢ overnight, 32.9¢ evening peak). Rates lock in for 7 years; leftover credits expire at the annual true-up.
Electricity rates
HI residential average ~43¢/kWh (EIA 2026) — the highest in the US.
What this means for solar
- Batteries are key: storing midday solar avoids low daytime export credits and covers the expensive evening peak.
- A self-supply (non-export) option is available for customers who prefer not to export.
