Compare what you would spend charging an EV at home versus fueling a gasoline car for the same annual miles. We use your state electricity rate (EIA 2026) and a gasoline price you can override, plus an EV efficiency preset. In most states home charging costs roughly one-third of the equivalent gasoline — and less still if the EV charges from your own solar panels.
Why electricity wins per mile
An EV converts 77–91% of grid energy into motion, while a gasoline car loses ~70% as heat. Even at high electricity rates, the per-mile energy cost is usually far below gas. Charging overnight on off-peak or from solar pushes the cost toward a few cents per mile.
